Dieting During Pregnancy Is Safe And Helpful

A study in the BMJ reports that the risk of serious complications such as preeclampsia , diabetes and premature birth can cut safely, even in pregnant women with overweight and obesity , following a calorie controlled healthy diet during pregnancy.
More than half of the female population in the UK of childbearing age are overweight or obese , and up to 40 % of European and American women earn more than the recommended weight during pregnancy , which has been associated with many problems serious health .

Health professionals believe that a woman ‘s pregnancy is the perfect time to talk about weight control , since pregnant women are generally more motivated to make changes that benefit themselves and their baby.
Head of Research, Dr. Shakila Thangaratinam of Queen Mary University of London has assessed the impact of diet , exercise, or both, weight gain during pregnancy and adverse effects on pregnant women and fetus through the analysis of data from more than 7,000 women in 44 randomized controlled trials. The team represented the designs and quality of minimum bias study .
They found that weight control interventions during pregnancy have been shown to be effective in reducing weight gain of the mother, and that plans have reached weight loss highest average about 4 kg compared with only 0.7 kg for exercise and 1 kg for a combination of diet and exercise.

They also found that diet was the most effective in preventing pregnancy complications option , such as preeclampsia , diabetes , high blood pressure and premature delivery , although the researchers point out that the final grade for these important tests results were classified as “low to very low. “
However, the results show that the interventions are really safe and have no negative effect on the baby’s weight . The researchers conclude that dietary interventions and lifestyle during pregnancy to improve outcomes for mother and child, but acknowledge that their study was subject to limitations as to the lack of data on risk factors, including age, ethnicity and socioeconomic status .
According to experts of St Thomas Hospital in London in London , say in a related editorial , the evidence to support a specific intervention is still insufficient.

While Lucilla Poston and Lucy Chappell agreed that this study is ” timely and welcome” , does not provide the necessary evidence required by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence ( NICE) to reassess guidelines for weight management during pregnancy.

Poston and Chappell refers to several studies underway that will allow a better understanding of effective interventions for overweight and obese women
